MARGAO: Three flats were burgled and one office was broken into at the PWD quarters at Borda last night even as the watchman who was to be on duty conveniently went home after locking his premises.
Police Inspector Chetan Patil informed that there were 20 checkpoints prepared for night patrolling last night but conceded that since the quarters had a watchman on duty, police did not visit it every time.
According to the watchman Prakash Mazgaonkar who abandoned his duty last night, his own flat was broken into and Rs 50,000 in cash and jewellery worth around Rs 1 lakh was stolen.
Around Rs 40,000 was also stolen from the house of one Pandurang Gaonkar while Dattaraj Kamat is yet to assess what was stolen from his flat.
Although the thieves broke open the office, nothing was stolen from there, the police said.
