PANJIM: There were tears in many eyes and black flags on the streets of Tiracol as the village and the rest of the State joined in saying their last goodbye to activist Dominic Pereira popularly known as Dominic de Tiracol.
The 70-year-old, who died of a heart attack last week, was the most prominent of the many faces that are fighting the golf course and villa project that is threatening to overtake the entire village.
The funeral brought around 1000 people to the village and was also a sign of protest as black flags lined the streets of Tiracol.
Archbishop of Goa and Daman Rev Filipe Neri Ferrao celebrated the funeral mass with 45 other priests. The sermon dwelt on the life of Dominic who was involved in singing Konkani songs and brought many tears.
“He was an exceptional man who dedicated his life to the village and to saving it from destruction. He will forever remain in our hearts and we will keep his memory alive the best we can,” said Fr Teo Fernandes, parish priest of Tiracol.
There will be a month’s mind mass for Dominic in Tiracol on July 23 while a musical protest will be held coming Sunday.
