MARGAO: Mount Mary High School, Chinchinim put up a creditable performance to get the better of Perpetual Succour Convent High School, Navelim 3-1 via the tie-breaker to move into the next round of the Union of Chinchinim Junior Cup under-14 All-Goa inter-school football tournament, organized by Union of Chinchinim Villagers, at church ground, Chinchinim, on Monday. The teams were locked goalless at full time.
In the eighth minute, Perpetual Succour had a golden opportunity to score through Nash Pereira but the latter’s header was saved by the goalkeeper of Mount Mary.
In the 16th minute, they attacked again but Feroz Khan’s fierce grounder missed the nylons Mount Mary off an assist by Riston Moraes.
At the other end, Mount Mary moved forward in the 23rd minute through Nesil Pinto, who took a powerful shot after the rival keeper was out of his position but Rollan Pereira came up with a timely clearance at the goalline.
Crossing over, the teams showed urgency in search of the opener but their strikers lacked ideas upfront and the ball was mostly confined to the midfield.
In the 42nd minute, Mount Mary came close to scoring but Melroy Fernandes attempt on goal was foiled by the rival keeper. Nehal Pawar provided the assist to Melroy.
The Navelim school also had an opportunity in the 46th minute but Frandon Pires’ shot hit the upright to leave him frustrated.
In the ensuing tie-breaker, Mount Mary High School, Chinchinim had the last laughand scored through Nehal Pawar, Macky Costa and Jaiden Costa while only Frendon scored for Perpetual Succour High School, Navelim.
