More than half a decade since these farmers from the western ghats regions first made the demand, there’s finally hope that these farmers will finally receive permanent space for display and sale of agricultural produce in the commercial capital.
Taking cognizance of the long demand of these farmers, the Chief Minister, while speaking at the concluding day of the Krishi Mahotsav in the city here, told the Agriculture Director to sit and discuss with the SGPDA Chairman and Member Secretary the modalities for allocating land admeasuring 100 mts for these farmers in the PDA market area.
The Chief Minister promised the farmers participating in the three-day Krishi Mahotsav that the government would make available the land admeasuring 100 square meters to sell their produce. “These farmers sit along side the roads and had to face the brunt of the Municipal officials. My government’s commitment is to provide a shed to these farmers in the SGPDA complex so that they can sell their produce from the hilly areas in the city”, he added.
Complimenting the farmers from the hilly regions for participating in the mahotsav despite the unseasonal rains, Kamat said the spirit of these farmers needs to be appreciated for taking part in the mahotsav despite all odds.
Given that the sale of the products have dipped due to the unseasonal rains, the Chief Minister issued instructions to the Horticulure department to explore the possibility of purchasing the produce from the farmers to mitigate the losses.
