Traffic cops play Santa, reward law abiders

They are often cursed and despised either for their highhandedness or simply for issuing challans for traffic violations.
But, Saturday saw the traffic police literally turning Santa Claus, when they offered sweets and chocolates to motorists and riders abiding law.
In fact, when personnel of the Margao Traffic Cell fanned out to various areas to keep tap on traffic violators, they carried with them not just the challan books but packets of chocolates.
Pillion riders travelling with headgears were taken aback when the traffic cops stopped them, but later it turned out to be pleasant surprise when the men-in-uniform offered them a chocolate for abiding the traffic rules.
Motorists who were found seated by fastening their seats belts also received a chocolate or two from the cops.
Margao Traffic police inspector Prabodh Shirwaikar told Herald that the objective of giving chocolates was to show their respect to riders and motorists adhering to the provisions of law.
He said the purpose behind issuing challans was not just to collect money, but also to make the motorists see reason and use helmets and fasten the seat belts.
PI Shirwaikar appealed to the citizens, especially the youth to ensure they use the headgear while riding.
