Three youth killed in mishaps

Three youth died in two separate road mishaps at Agassaim and Porvorim on Saturday.
Herald reporter adds: It was a fateful Saturday morning for Xavier Cruz Fernandes, 30, of Verna and Savio Fernandes, 29, from Majorda both of whom died after a speeding jeep knocked down their scooter at Cardozo Garage on the National Highway-17 close to the Agassaim Police Station.
PSI Chavan said the deceased were carrying bread to Cortalim on a Honda Dio scooter when the Mahindra jeep, which came from the opposite direction, mowed them down.
The PSI said the Mahindra jeep, which was on the way to Karmali, near Old Goa, came on the wrong side of the road and dragged the two for some distance. One pole was found bent in the mishap, he stated.
He informed that the victims were carrying bread from Goa Velha to Cortalim. One of the deceased, Savio Fernandes, owned a bakery,he mentioned. While Xavier died on the spot, Savio breathed his last in hospital a little after 8 am, he stated.
He said the driver of the jeep was arrested under Section 279, 304-A of IPC for rash and negligent driving.
Porvorim correspondent adds: A 25-year-old pillion rider from Ponda died when she fell off a motorcycle at Porvorim while proceeding from Mapusa to Panjim at about 8.45 am.
According to Porvorim police, Fiona Rodrigues had gone to visit her cousin residing at Guirim. She was proceeding from Mapusa to Panjim along with her cousin Romeo Mariano Costa on a Pulsar motorcycle (GA-05 A-9943).
On reaching the Alto-Porvorim bazaar, Romeo Costa tried to overtake a vehicle but noticed an oncoming vehicle and jammed the brakes.
The pillion rider, Fiona Rodrigues, lost her balance and fell off the bike. She was admitted immediately to Goa Medical College Hospital at Bambolim with serious injuries, but breathed her last later in the morning. Head Constable Krishna Ghoble is investigating the case.
