MARGAO: The residents of Navelim have expressed anger over the traffic congestion at Navelim junction and urged the authorities to come up with a permanent solution like diversion of traffic during the peak hours of the morning and evening.
When Herald visited the main junction near Navelim Church, there was a pile-up of vehicles in a logjam, with pedestrians and school children threading through the traffic on foot, struggling to cross the roads.
Locals have complained that the traffic police are not available when they require them, and the lack of traffic signboards has added to the mess, with motorists and tourists stopping to ask for directions. “The situation over here during the peak hours is unacceptable. The traffic flow in Navelim is a mess due to the absence of proper traffic management. Actually, there is an urgent need for permanent traffic police posted here so that traffic flow is restored,” said Roland Fernandes. Another local said that even ambulances are often stuck in the area, with no way to proceed out of the jam. “As a temporary solution, traffic can be diverted through the Western Bypass during peak hours,” said Tushar Naik, who blamed the local political leaders and the panchayat for not taking the issue seriously.
