MARGAO: Problem erupted at Margao for the tribal women selling vegetables near police station and other places after the municipal inspectors ordered them to vacate the place immediately on Thursday. The women pleaded with the MMC not to end their business abruptly. Meanwhile, the MMC said that they are in the process to find an alternate land for them and would soon shift them there.
Yashwanti Velip from Morpirla said that they sell fruits and vegetables grown in complete organic manner and is the source of her living. “We fail to understand why we were asked to leave and removed from the place even after creating no problem to anyone,” she lamented.
Diksha Velip from Padi said that they had never created any problem to any traffic or persons while sitting in the places and selling their produce. “They said they have got orders from the top and hence have been removed us,” she said.
“We are always charged money for sitting and selling there and are removed at their whims and fancies. We are Goans and need to be protected in our trade,” Diksha said.
The MMC Vice Chairperson Tito Cardozo was requested permission to sell vegetables at least on Thursday as the vegetables they have grown have to be sold due to its perishable nature.
Cardozo has informed that the MMC is in the process of searching for a place for the vendors in the town.
Cardozo said that they have ordered the market inspectors to tell all the vendors selling on open space to vacate the areas. He also informed that an aggressive anti-encroachment drive will be taken up in Gandhi and New Market to clear all the encroachments.
Vendors from Gandhi Market earlier on Wednesday met and requested the removal of these vendors all over Margao.
