Two caught smuggling drugs into Colvale jail

PANJIM: The alleged drug smuggling into the Colvale Correctional Home was busted on Monday night when two persons were caught red-handed in possession of charas. Sandip Ghanekar and Babu Palyekar were caught by the IRB staff posted at the entrance of the jail gate. However, the Prisons department is awaiting a report to initiate action. 
“The jail’s kitchen grinder, which had undergone repairs at a local shop, was being brought back to the jail premise in a rickshaw. As a part of the procedure, the vehicle and both individuals were frisked while entering the premise when they were found in possession of 3 gms of charas, worth Rs 4,000,” a source said. 
It is learnt that the drugs was hidden in the dashboard of the rickshaw. Sources said involvement of some jail staff and inmates cannot be ruled out, but a police report will ascertain the facts. “Let the report come to us. Accordingly action will be initiated,” Inspector General of Prisons Rajendra Mirajkar said. 
The Mapusa police have registered an offence against the alleged accused.
