VASCO: Two android cell phones and two SIM cards were seized from inmates lodged at the Sada Sub Jail during a raid conducted by the Jail Superintendent last week. This is the second such seizure of mobile phones in the last few months.
Sources said that Mormugao deputy collector Sabaji Shetye, who is holding charge as Sada sub jail Superintendent, conducted a raid in all the jail cells and seized two mobile phones and two SIM cards from two inmates.
After the seizure Shetye pulled up the concerned jail staff and officials and issued fresh directions to ensure that sneaking of banned products does not occur in the future and that all – right from officer to junior staff – should be frisked compulsorily.
“As part of punishment to both inmates, we have curtailed their rights of meeting family members for a period of time and we will continue similar raids in future to ensure that such illegal activities at the jail stop completely,” Shetye said. He added, “As part of preventive measures, I called all the officers and staff responsible for maintaining security at the Sada jail and have given them a strict warning.”
On May 30, 2015, some 18 mobile phones, ten chargers, 34 SIM cards, and several packets of tobacco had been seized by a special team headed by Aguada Jail Superintendent Melvyn Vaz during a raid at this jail after which it was presumed that sneaking of banned products inside the jail would stop.
According to jail sources sneaking of banned products, especially mobile phones, continues. Though 72 under trial inmates have been shifted to Colvale, sneaking activities at Sada sub jail have not reduced. Sources said that it is mainly the jail guards, in connivance with other security personnel, who take banned products inside the jail at night time.
