PANJIM: Two of the three retrenched women workers of the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) broke their fast unto death as their ‘peaceful protest’ demanding absorbing over 60 workers in the job entered the 20th day on Tuesday. Two other workers have instead joined the lone woman Mehak Badami from Vasco on hunger strike.
Goa Trade Unions Confederation has accused the government of giving step motherly treatment to the demand. “We had a meeting with CM Laxmikant Parsekar to resolve the issue but he is not willing to give the striking workers any relief,” union president Ajitsing Rane said.
A week ago, Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress Party, also supporting the striking workers, had marched till the CM’s residence seeking relief but to no avail.
Several workers, who were appointed on daily wages during the Congress tenure in 2011 are on strike demanding that the BJP-led government – that has rendered them jobless for the last 21 months – take them back into jobs. The workers accused the government of empty promises to re-induct them in the daily wage service.
