PANJIM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Friday announced to begin comprehensive development of Vaddem lake in Vasco, which has been polluted due to discharge of sewage water and garbage.
Parrikar said that the de-silting of the lake would be carried out before the monsoons by Water Resources Department while the development and beautification of lake would be done in October. He said that development plan would be kept ready by September.
“Along with development, a proper mechanism would be worked out for maintaining the water body,” he said.
Parrikar was replying during Question Hour, to Dabolim MLA Mauvin Godinho who brought to the notice of the House that the storm water drains from surrounding areas and even from across the road carry waste water into the lake. He said that a ‘nullah’ also originates from the lake.
Godinho said that recently a large number of dead fish were seen floating in the lake. He demanded immediate beautification of the lake, since it is the only water body for entire Vasco city.
The Congress MLA informed the House that Mormugao Municipal Council has already passed a resolution for beautification of Vaddem lake through Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA).
Chief Minister said that it is understood that plastic reacts with water and reduces the oxygen content in the water, which is one of the reasons for the fish mortality.
“I cannot tell you at this moment under which department the development work would be undertaken. It can be GSUDA or Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) or tourism,” he said.
