VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC), in a special meeting on Friday, decided to form ward-wise committees to identify mosquito breeding sites and to help health department officials spread awareness about dengue.
Although the meeting was called to brief the councillors, only 11 councillors out of 20 showed up and this irked Vasco citizens. A local at the meeting said, “This shows that the absent councillors are least bothered about the people’s health.”
The councillors who were present neither defended nor explained why the nine councillors were absent. MMC Chairperson Lavina D’Souza said, “I had personally invited all the councillors, but I don’t have any clue why so many are absent today.”
During the meeting, locals blasted the MMC for not carrying out proper pre-monsoon works and held it responsible for the rising number of dengue cases.
After going through an hour-long presentation made by health officers from the Vasco Urban Health Centre, the councillors decided to fully support the state administration, which had already initiated steps to prevent more dengue cases in Vasco, especially New Vaddem and Sada.
“The ward committees will identify areas where water has become stagnant. They will also help the health committee formed by the health department to create awareness about dengue virus. A report of all actions will be submitted to MMC, health department and the office of the Deputy Collector,” said MMC Councillor Manish Arolkar.
