PANJIM: In an interesting development, the Transport Department has asked Vedanta Limited to pay Rs 1.38 cr as cess on coal and coke transportation failing which action would be initiated.
An order dated November 7, 2016 issued by Sandeep B Desai, Assistant Director of Transport, has give Vedanta 15 days to fall in line.
“In exercise of power in Goa Rural Improvement & Welfare Cess Act 2000 & Rules made there under, is of the opinion that Vedanta (formerly known as Sesa Goa Ltd/Sesa Sterile Ltd) is liable to pay the cess on the coal & coke procured by them,” the order states.
Further it says, “…as such it is directed to deposit Rs 1,38,58,900 within 15 days from the receipt of the order and produce the copy of the said challan paid to the office, failing which department shall be compelled to recover the said amount due to the government under the act or rules as on arrears on land revenue.”
