Vijai Sardesai, president of the Goa Forward Party, has alleged that welfare schemes are being turned into election gimmicks in states governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party. Sardesai claimed that several programmes meant for public welfare are being used for political gain ahead of elections.
He cited examples from Maharashtra, where authorities reportedly recovered ₹165 crore under the Ladki Bahin scheme from ineligible beneficiaries. He also referred to reports from Delhi where around 60,000 ineligible beneficiaries were allegedly receiving benefits.
Sardesai further mentioned cases in Punjab and Bihar involving pension fraud and men claiming benefits meant for women. He questioned why CAG findings showing ineligible beneficiaries receiving payments were not addressed earlier.
