Villagers demand beautification of Varca beach

The Varca gram sabha on Sunday has asked the government to take up beautification of the Varca beach out of the Rs 200 crore grant sanctioned by the Centre for the purpose.
At the gram sabha meeting held on Sunday, the gram sabha adopted a resolution for the beach beautification project under the central grant.
The gram sabha also passed a resolution demanding that reduction in the conversion fees for individual residential purpose. Sarpanch Vincentina Fernandes said a resolution was also passed seeking reduction in the infrastructure tax which has been hiked from Rs 30 to Rs 100.
A resolution was also adopted by the gram sabha asking the government to take up drainages along major roads in the village.
The gram sabha witnessed discussions on the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme wherein the Sarpanch was quizzed over the implementation of the scheme in the village.
Gram sabha member Nazario Pinto sought to know from the Sarpanch the fate of the scheme, saying the scheme has not been effectively implemented in Varca village.
When the Sarpanch replied that the Panchayat could not go ahead with the scheme for want of funds, Pinto sought to know whether the Panchayat body had drawn the attention of the Block Development Officer to the problems faced by the Panchayat.
Pinto also tried to take the Panchayat to task for taking up drainage work, seeking to know whether the government had declined to construct drainages in the village. “What was the urgency for the Panchayat body to spent funds on drainages when the government is giving grants for drainage works”, he sought to know.
Pinto also demanded to know from the Panchayat the outstanding tax arrears due from the hotels and establishments.
Another gram sabha member asked the Panchayat body to take up desilting work of the water bodies in the village with the help of the local MLA and government.
