SANGUEM: Given the acute shortage of drinking water supply to the residents of Wadem Colony No 1, Sanguem since the last over two months, the locals led an agitation to the Water Supply Department at Sanguem demanding immediate supply of regular drinking water to the village.
The locals claimed that despite sacrificing their ancestral lands to pave way for the construction of the Salaulim Dam, the government has failed in making any provision to regulate drinking water supply in the area.
While water from Salaulim Dam reaches every nook and corner of South Goa, the locals from Wadem have to bear the brunt of acute shortage of drinking water since the past two months, complained Chandan Unandkar, a villager.
Incidentally, the agitators were stopped at the entrance to the Government Office Complex by the police, which left them furious and demanded a meeting with Assistant Engineer Gurunath Bishalli.
When the Assistant Engineer met them, the locals questioned the AE over the acute shortage of drinking water supply to the village. The AE failed to provide any satisfactory answers, which left the residents furious.
Subsequently, the AE called the higher authorities from Margao who assured to provide an immediate solution to the long pending drinking water supply problem of the locals after conducting a site visit.
Panch Francisco Costa accused the Water Supply Department and the government officials of step-motherly treatment to the rehabilitated locals of in Wadem Colony No 1 and demanded immediate solution to the drinking water supply problem on urgent basis.
