Panjim: A ‘Walk for Peace’ on the International Day of Non-Violence, which is on October 2, will be held throughout the day in Goa on Gandhi Jayanti.
The organisers have given a call to people to join this peace walk in large numbers. Fr Bolmax Pereira said the walk follows the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi.
“It will be held from dawn to dusk (5 am to 6 pm), from East to West, (from Mollem to Vasco,) covering around 70kms. It’s a call to come together to promote peace in these difficult times, with our surroundings ridden with crimes against humanity, against our fellow beings, against our natural heritage. We shunned hate, violence, drug abuse, etc,” said Fr Bolmax.
He added that the peace marchers will walk the long journey passing through 16 villages of Goa (Mollem, Sacordem, Darbandora, Usgao, Khandepar, Bethora, Ponda, Borim, Loutolim, Rassaim, Quelossim, Cortalim, Sancoale, St. Jacinto, Chicalim and Vasco).
People from all walks of life are free to join the march and exit at any time/pointof the journey along the route.
Fr. Bolmax also added that those who cannot physically join the walk can participate by praying for the cause or even simply being in solidarity or walking a few steps wherever they are or by even offering a glass of water to those who walk. “No shouting slogans. No violent protests. It’s just a walk for peace, Fr Pereira added.
The walk will be led by members of John Paul II Foundation for Sports Goa, co-hosted by Parish of St Francis Xavier Church Chicalim and NGO’s Goencho Ekvott, Goencho Avaaz and Chicalim Youth Farmers Club.
