PONDA: PWD and Transport Minister Sudin Dhavlikar on Tuesday launched village-wise plastic collection drive in Kavlem Panchayat.
According to Dhavlikar, the plastic drive has been undertaken by the PWD in association with panchayats and it will cost about Rs 75 lakh. The drive will be undertaken in Ponda taluka, covering all 19 panchayats and even NH4A from Mollem to Ribandar.
“It will take at least 15 to 20 days to clear plastic waste strewn in all the nine wards of panchayat and it will not be possible without the support from residents. My sincere appeal to the people it to limit the use of plastic and do not throw it out,” stated Dhavlikar after launching the drive at Dhavli in Kavlem Panchayat.
He further urged people to store plastic waste in their houses to be collected every Sunday. “We have already identified three storing facilities belonging to the PWD to store plastic waste which will be collected during the drive, one at Curti and another two at Farmagudi. After collecting the plastic waste, it will be disposed scientifically,” he informed.
He also informed that he intended to install an organic waste converter to dispose-off wet waste and claimed that the machine does not emit any foul smell. “We also plan to install organic waste converter like the ones installed in the PMC jurisdiction,” he said. “We will also undertake awareness drives to reduce the use of plastic and also on garbage management. The drive will not succeed without the support from the public,” added Dhavlikar.
Kavlem Sarpanch Rajesh Kavlekar along with panchas and PWD officials were also present on the occasion.
