The unchecked spread of water hyacinth in the Sal River has emerged as a major concern for traditional fishermen from Betul, Assolna, and Chinchinim, severely affecting their livelihoods and daily fishing operations.
Local fishermen said thick mats of floating water hyacinth frequently become entangled in their fishing nets, making it difficult to operate and significantly reducing their catch. According to them, the problem has persisted for nearly two years, resulting in financial losses and hardship for families that depend on fishing for their income.

Raising the issue, Cruz Silva called for compensation for the affected fishermen, stating that the prolonged infestation has had a serious impact on the fishing community. He urged the concerned authorities to immediately remove the invasive weed from the river and restore normal fishing conditions.
Silva also pointed out that despite repeated complaints, fishermen have continued to face the problem for the past two years without any effective intervention. The affected fishing community has appealed to the government to take urgent remedial measures to protect their livelihood and ensure the free flow of the Sal River.
