VASCO: The Western India Shipyard Ltd (WISL) Workers Union has threatened to go on a hunger strike on July 18 and 19, to draw the attention of the government to the plight of 350-odd workers who have not been paid their salaries for several months.
According to the information, the workers union recently held a meeting and after lengthy discussion it was decided by all the workers that they all would hold a hunger strike at Lt Narendra Mayekar’s Samarak at Headland Sada on July 18 and 19.
“We have tried our level best to approach all possible leaders in the state, but still our issue of pending salary is not solved. If the government does not come to our rescue soon, then, we, along with our families, would soon be starving to death as today we have no money even to pay for school fees of our children’s or to purchase rations,” a Union leader said.
As a last resort, he said, “We have decided go on hunger strike, which we have intimated to the police, the deputy collector and the Mormugao Municipal council.”
