The race to become the United Kingdom’s next prime minister is underway after Keir Starmer resigned as Labour leader and prime minister, triggering a leadership contest within the governing party.Starmer’s departure follows mounting political pressure and growing dissatisfaction among sections of Labour’s parliamentary party. While he will continue in a caretaker role until a successor is elected, attention has quickly shifted to the candidates who could take over at 10 Downing Street.Under Labour Party rules, any leadership hopeful must first secure the backing of at least 20 per cent of Labour MPs in the House of Commons.
Once nominations close, the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) will determine the timetable and oversee the election process.The contest begins with parliamentary nominations and ballots among Labour MPs before eventually moving to a wider vote involving party members and affiliated organisations, including trade unions. The process is expected to take several weeks.Among the names being discussed most prominently is Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester and a former cabinet minister.

Burnham has long been regarded as one of Labour’s most recognisable figures and is considered by many within the party as a potential successor. Although he has not formally announced a bid, his name has featured prominently in early discussions surrounding the leadership race.Other possible contenders include Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who has built support among MPs advocating policy reform, and Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, who enjoys strong backing from parts of Labour’s membership and trade union movement.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper is also viewed as a potential candidate due to her extensive ministerial experience.Importantly, Britain does not require a general election whenever a prime minister resigns. Since Labour currently holds a majority in the House of Commons, the party’s newly elected leader will automatically become prime minister.As Labour prepares for a potentially significant internal contest, the outcome will determine not only the party’s future direction but also who leads the United Kingdom in the months ahead.
