MARGAO: With the never-ending work of digging of main road near Xelvona for sewer lines or laying of water pipe lines causing traffic congestion for commuters, especially during the peak hours, the locals have demanded that traffic police constable or home guards personnel be deployed in this area to avert any untoward incident.
The incessant road digging for civic works taken up on Xelvona-Curchorem road has made commuting on this road-stretch a nightmare. One can see roads dug up at various places.
In the morning, commuters going for work have to take this route. Due to the traffic congestion caused by road digging, they get stuck in traffic jams and have to wait for long to be able to cross the road.
To make matters worse, there is no traffic police or Home Guards constable posted here to regulate the movement of traffic. This is leading to further traffic congestion.
The traffic snarls caused by slow-moving traffic is resulting in employees getting delayed for work. Also, there are instances of minor accidents, resulting in heated arguments on the road.
If this was not enough, the presence of stray cattle on the road makes the matter worse.
Atul Naik, who works in the private sector, said that the civic works on the road are on for too long and demanded that the work be expedited.
“There is always traffic congestion when office-goers are on their way to Curchorem. While the digging of road happens, officials of the concerned department must be present on the spot, to supervise the labourers. When the work is on, some labourers are seen sitting on the road, thus obstructing the traffic,” Naik said.
A Supervisor who was present at the spot, said that work is in progress and it will be completed soon.
