PANJIM: The appointment of former cricketer Dinesh Mongia and J P Yadav as coaches for the State Ranji team and U-23 team respectively has been challenged.
The High Court of Bombay at Goa has stayed the ombudsman order to refrain them from joining the coaching camp, which started from August 19. The High Court directed the Selection Committee to appoint the coach on an interim or temporary basis.
The ombudsman has stayed the selection of J P Yadav and has asked the Cricket Advisory Committee to select the interim coach till final order.
Aggrieved with the order, the Goa Cricket Association (GCA) approached the High Court and obtained a stay to the ombudsman order.
Now, on September 16, the GCA will have to submit the minutes of the annual general meeting dated October 8, 2023, wherein, the petitioner had contended that the annual general body had selected a committee called Cricket Operations and Advisory Committee headed by Suresh Mahadevan and gave powers to the said committee.
The High Court however observed that the Ranji team was already in Bangalore and the conditioning-camp was already ongoing. It also pointed out that the complaint filed by Hemant Angle was not tenable as he had no locus standi to challenge the appointment of the coach for the U-23 team as he only applied for appointment for coach for the Ranji team.
Considering the schedule produced by the petitioner with regards to the U-23 team for which strength and conditioning started on September 2, 2024, it was clear that the stay granted by the authority would hamper the camp.
Accordingly, the impugned order as far as grant of stay to the
appointment of the coach to U-23 including the direction issued to the selection committee for appointment of a temporary coach was stayed till the next date of hearing on September 16, before the ombudsman and later before the High Court on September 18.
