RAIA: Arlem Youth Association, Raia, edge past Fr Agnelo Youth Sports Club, Paroda, 6-5, in the inaugural match to move into the next round of 18th All Goa Guirdolim Panchayat Cup match played at Chandor Church sports complex ground, on Saturday.
Fr Agnelo YSC players started the match on a strong footing creating two clear chances in the first five minutes but their strikers were wayward.
Arlem Youth Association defended well to ensure the score remained 0-0 at the breather.
After change of ends, Arlem YA led by Garvison Fernandes dominated the play and almost scored in the 40th minute but the Fr Agnelo YSC keeper dived full length and parried the ball away. Fr Agnelo YSC could have sealed the match in their favour in the dying minutes but Regan Costa missed from handshaking distance. The match thus ended 0-0 at the end of regulations time.
In the resultant tie-breaker, Arlem YA proved to be the better shooters converting all of their six chances, while for Fr Agnelo YSC, Pravesh Borkar’s kick was saved by the Arlem YA goalkeeper.
Garvison Fernandes of Arlem YA was awarded the player-of-the-match award.
Earlier, Guirdolim Club President Patwin Fizardo welcomed. Former deputy sarpanch Frankie Rodrigues declared the tournament open, while chief guest Guirdolim Sarpanch Sonia Fernandes addressed the gathering in the presence of panch members of Guirdolim Panchayat.
