Adarsh upset Candolim in opener

MAPUSA: Adarsh Yuvak Sangh, Saligao registered a solitary goal victory over Candolim Sports Club in the inaugural match of Calangute Panchayat Cup football tournament organized by Calangute Association at Poriat ground, Calangute, Wednesday.
Adarsh started the game on an attacking note and surged ahead in the 20th minute through Rohidas. Avelino’s powerful right-footer beat rival goalkeeper Marshall but hit the horizontal bar and fell to Rohidas, who quickly tapped in from close-range.
Two minutes later, Adarsh could have doubled their advantage but Sidhesh’s effort was denied by the upright after rounding off the rival custodian.
Post resumption, Candolim tried hard in search of the equalizer but Adarsh goalkeeper Soma left the rival strikers frustrated as he denied Candolim’s Sagar and Paulo from scoring in a one-on-one situation.
In the dying minutes, Adarsh came close to scoring their second through Govind but this time goalkeeper Marshall was up to the task.
Earlier, chief guest, Geeta Parab, sarpanch, Calangute panchayat kicked-off the tournament in the presence of guest of honour, Savio Gonsalves, deputy sarpanch, Calangute; Joseph Sequeira, ex-sarpanch and panch, Calangute panchayat; Clara Fernandes, panch, Calangute panchayat, Alex Fernandes, president, Calangute Association; Alirio Lobo, general secretary, Jerry D’Souza, sports secretary, Bento D’Souza, treasurer and other dignitaries.
