NAVELIM: Corps of Signals scored a solitary goal win over Panjim Footballers in the Goa Football Association Goa Professional League match played at 3MTR ground, Navelim, on Monday.
By virtue of this win, Signals now leapfrogged Panjim Footballers collecting 16 points from 16 games while Panjim Footballers have 14 points from 19 games.
The Panjim side were unlucky as despite dominating the game, they were punished for their missed chances.
Daryl missed two clear goal scoring chances in the first 45 minute and Clifton Fernandes also saw his effort being saved by the rival keeper.
Corps of Signals also came close to scoring but Panjim Footballers Sherwin D’Cunha was at his best in the first 45 minutes.
Crossing over, Corps of Signals scored the only goal of the match when Pawan Thakur headed in a cross from the left, which deflected off a Panjim Footballers defender before entering the net.
This time, Sherwin couldn’t do much to avoid the goal.
From there on, Panjim kept pressing in search of the goal but they just couldn’t keep their composure in front of the rival goal.
In the final 10 minutes of the game, Panjim came close to scoring twice—first Daryl failed to connect his shot and then Clifton continued his miserable evening, misfiring wide.
Signals had a chance to double the tally but Sherwin came with a point blank save to stop Pawan from netting his second. Panjim’s Samson Simoes missed another chance to level terms when he was set on goal by Clifton.
Earlier, a minute silence was observed in memory of the CRPF personnels who lost their lives in Jammu and Kashmir.
