Corps of Signals, Penha de Franca SC play goalless draw

MAPUSA: Corps of Signals held Penha de Franca Sports Club to a goalless draw to continue their reign at the top of the GFA First Division League table, at Duler Stadium, here, on Monday.

The teams have collected 17 points each. However, Penha de Franca SC are second after losing to Corps of Signals 1-0 in their first leg encounter.
Buoyed by a vociferous crowd, the sides matched each other for skills and the play was confined to the midfield for majority of the proceedings.
Penha de Franca SC came teasingly close to breaking the deadlock in the first quarter of the match.
However, Corps of Signals’ keeper Adney Fernandes came up a save to deny L Solomon from the free-kick.
Crossing over, the teams pressed harder to break the deadlock with Denzil Sequeira and Ashok Meghari piling on a series of raids.
However fine goalkeeping by keeper Nivas Mon frustrated their efforts time and again.
In the 60th minute, Ashok was denied from scoring in a one-to-one situation by the keeper while a couple of minutes later, Ashok’s low grounder from hand-shaking distance was kept away by Nivas through a neat collection.
Corps of Signals too had their fair share of chances but their strikers Harshad Thube and Lairellekpam Singh lacked firepower.
Penha de Franca SC went all out in the final quarter to score the match-winner but failed.
