BENAULIM: Curtorim Gym edged past Goa Velha SC 2-1 to enter the semi-finals of the 33rd Strikers Trophy Football Tournament organized by Young Strikers Benaulim, at St John Baptist ground, Dando-Benaulim, on Wednesday.
Curtorim Gym surged ahead in the 19th minute when striker Welson Fernandes on receiving a pass from Nilister Silveira sent in a floater inside the box where Myson Fernandes leaped high and nodded past the Goa Velha goalkeeper Venish Shirodkar.
Goa Velha restored parity in the 56th minute when Curtorim defender Savio Fernandes handled the ball in the box off a Kunak Kundaikar’s cross and the resultant penalty was easily converted by Chatoor Naik.
Goa Velha’s joy was however short-lived as within 10 minutes they conceded the second goal as referee Milar Noronha had to intervene and point to the dreaded spot for the second time in the match when Goa Velha’s Joseph Rodrigues handled the ball inside the area.
Nelson Fernandes who took the responsibility slammed the ball past Goa Velha goalkeeper Vinish Kundaikar to give Curtorim the lead again. Thereafter, Goa Velha tried hard but were unable to secure the equaliser.
