MARGAO: Curtorim Gymkhana got the better of Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club 5-3 to move into the quarter-final of the 44th Custodio memorial inter-village football tournament, organized by Raia Sporting Club, at Panchayat ground, Raia, on Friday. The score read 2-1 at half time in favour of Curtorim Gymkhana.
Sao Jose de Areal got off to a perfect start as Fredrick Endro put them ahead in the fourth minute with a powerful grounder off an assist by Aggio Antao.
Curtorim Gymkhana regrouped and equalized in the 16th minute through Marcus Fernandes’ scorching long ranger.
They went ahead in the 27th minute as Marcus secured his brace through a deft placement with the ball hitting the upright and rolling inside the goal. Joaquim Carvalho came up with the assis.
Post resumption, Mario Mascarenhas scored for Curtorim Gymkhana with a tap in after receiving the ball from Welson Fernandes to make it 3-1.
However, in the 40th minute, Francis Baretto scored for Sao Jose de Areal but Curtorim Gymkhana scored their fourth goal of the evening in the 48th minute through Joel Fernandes. Soa Jose de Areal did not give up the fight and made it 4-3 with Francis Baretto finding the back of the net.
Finally, in the 57th minute, Curtorim Gymkhana’s Stephen Fernandes scored to put the issue beyond doubt.
