MARGAO: Sporting Club of Davorlim prevailed over ten-men Verna Sports Club 5-3 via the tie-breaker to cruise into the semi-final of Mc Dowell’s No. 1 Yarri Premier Cup (South Goa) inter-village football tournament, organized by Enfermos Sports Club, at Rosary ground, Navelim on Monday. There was no score at normal period.
Sporting Club of Davorlim dominated the game throughout the match but their forwards ran out ideas after reaching the rival danger zone.
At the other end, Verna were struggling. Davorlim had a golden chance to surge ahead in the 10th minute but Joel Furtado failed to guide his shot into the net after Paxton Gomes laid him on the platter.
Soon, Meclon Colaco’s feeble shot went straight into the safe hands of Verna keeper Camilo Barretto.
Davorlim almost broke the deadlock but lanky striker Venson Figureido spurned the easiest chance with only rival goalkeeper at his mercy.
Verna came close to score but Basilio Rego’s rasping shot was well taken care by Davorlim goalkeeper Sachin Ashtekar.
Post resumption, Davorlim continued to enjoy better share of exchanges but their forwards were guilty of misfiring from close range.
Verna suffered a jolt in the 40th minute when defender Martiso Abranches was red carded by referee Caetano Pereira for using abusive language.
Davorlim muffed easy sitters when rival defender committed a folly and the ball travelled to unmarked striker Venson Figureido with only rival goalkeeper to beat, he found the side netting, much to the dismay of Davorlim supporters.
In the penalty shoot-out, Meclon Colaco, Jordel Gomes, Venson Figureido, Agnelo Colaco and Paxton Gomes were on target for Davorlim while Basilio Rego, Savio Fernandes and Santan Rego converted for Verna
Myron Fernandes and Maclon Coalco of Verna Sports Club and Sporting Club of Davorlim were adjudged Best defender and man-of-the-match respectively.
Rhea Lamba, Regional Trade Marketing Manager, United Spirits Limited, Mumbai was the chief guest along with Kshitj Shetye, SCMM, Goa and Joe Dias, event manager of VJT Arts, Chinchininm.
