MAPUSA: In one of the high scoring matches of the season which saw three goals in the same number of minutes, Dempo Sports Club managed to get the better of Churchill Bros Sports Club 4-2 in GFA’s Goa Professional League, round six, at Duler Stadium, here, Tuesday. All the goals came in the second session.
After a barren first session, Dempo substitute Uttam Rai broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute. Churchill Bros exerted pressure it was an own-goal by Mahesh Gawli that put them back into the match. Soon, The Red Machines took the lead through a strike by Manjit Singh but Dempo scored two quick goals in the next two minutes trough Tolgay Ozbey and Joy Ferrao. Australian Tolgay then made it 4-2 in the dying minutes before being sent off after a second booking.
Dempo are now with 10 points in the fourth position in the standings while Churchill Bros are in the seventh place with the same number of points but a match in hand.
The Red Machines hardly looked threatening as they missed the services of striker Odafa Okolie, who was out due to an ankle injury. Dempo took full advantage of their rival’s weakness and went on to dominate the first session but could not score.
The trend continued after changing ends. Dempo’s Nicolau Borges’ free-kick from a narrow angle hit the upright while Tolgay Ozbey squandered two clear chances.
The deadlock was broken by Dempo substitute Uttam Rai in the 63rd minute after he dribbled past Elvis Barretto inside the box and coolly slotted nodded in. He was assisted by Joy Ferrao.
The match came to life in the 67th minute when Churchill Bros equalized through an own-goal by Dempo centre-back Mahesh Gawli.
Ten minutes later, the Varca side went into the lead after Manjit Singh cleverly chipped over rival custodian Bruno Colaco, 2-1.
Their celebrations were cut short in the very next minute as Tolgay finished clinically to level terms. Soon, in the 79th minute, Joy headed in off a cross from Nicolau.
With five minutes to go for the final whistle, Tolgay secured his brace after Myron did the spadework, 4-2.
However, the Australian striker received a second booking with a minute on the clock and was sent to the dressing room as the inevitable red card followed.
