PANJIM: Fr Agnel College, Pilar grounded DMC College, Assagao 2-0 in the AC Fernandes memorial inter-collegiate football tournament football match, at Santa Cruz ground, Thursday.
The highlight of the day was a brilliant brace by Fredson, who was the most hardworking player throughout. As expected Fr Agnel dominated the proceedings from the word go and five minutes into the first half, Jason supplied a neat through ball to unmarked Fredson, who finished with a deft placement.
DMC worked hard and threatened at time but the Fr Agnel defense stood firm. DMC suffered a huge blow when star midfielder Abijit Salgaonkar had to be taken off due to a shoulder injury after colliding with Fr Agnel keeper Presley Fernandes.
The second half started on an equal foot with the teams working hard to maintain possession of the ball. Fr Agnel did make a lot of efforts but they were kept at bay by the DMC defense which was spearheaded by Jeorge.
Ten minutes before the final whistle, Fr Agnel were awarded a free-kick. The resultant kick fell to unmarked Fredson, who was left free by the DMC defenders assuming he was in an off-side position. The latter then cleverly headed into the net giving no chance to the DMC keeper to make it 2-0.
Fr Agnel College now face the winners of St Xavier College, Maupsa and Don Bosco College, Panjim in the semi-final on October 7.
