Plan to revise inter-village tournament rules
TEAM HERALD
PANJIM: The GFA placed on record the invaluable services rendered by Elvis Gomes during the latter’s tenure as the executive director of SAG, here, Tuesday.
Elvis, who is the senior vice-president of GFA, was praised for taking up the renovation and refurbishment of Tilak stadium in Vasco which will enable Mormugao Taluka fans to witness the I-League matches being hosted by Goan I-League clubs from April 4.
Besides, all the work undertaken by Elvis for football promotion in general was also lauded following a resolution moved by Alirio Lobo of Calangute which was supported by all members and president Shrinivas Dempo.
It was pointed out that Elvis had ironing out all the past issues with SAG and built an excellent rapport with GFA.
A four-member committee consisting of Elvis Gomes, Schubert Furtado, Bishut Themudo and Babli Mandrekar was set up to restructure of the Goa Pro League. Whether the move is a follow up after Vasco Club had contacted some members, could not be ascertained. However, the panel is expected to go into the relegation structure with some members of the opinion that even if the number of teams is to be increased, this could be done only by promoting the First Division teams and not by retaining the teams under the relegation clause.
The official competition rules are expected to be revised with members not in favour of transfers in case of teams for inter-village tournaments. The new draft will be placed before the AGM for ratification.
The GFA deliberated on the inter-village rules to plug a lot of grey areas which have been surfacing time and again at AGMs. It has been decided to issue new specially designed inter- village cards by withdrawing all previously issued cards to reduce manipulations witnessed in the recent past. The competition rules were also discussed with a decision to finalize the draft at the next meeting. Schubert Furtado and Welvin Menezes have been asked to incorporate suggestions and come up with the final draft.
A committee under the chairmanship of Elvis Gomes has been set up to explore the possibility of adopting a sound marketing strategy for the Pro League 2013-14. The committee may recommend increasing the number of teams to make the competition broad based and exciting.
Meanwhile, the renovated Tilak Stadium is set for inauguration on April 4 at 6 p.m., before the Salgaocar – Prayag United match which will kick off at 6.30 p.m., with Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar and Carlos Almeida, MLA doing the honours.
The final inspection of the stadium was carried out today by SAG’s executive director, Sandip Jacques. GFA’s executive committee members Savio Messias, Lawrence Gomes, Prakash Naik, RAJ Gomes of Salgaocar, Nehru stadium manager Guru were among those present.
