PANJIM: Government servants will not be allowed to hold elective office in any sports association for more than four years or one term, whichever is less, according to Govt of India’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (Department of Sports) circular dated March 25.
The circular addressed to the federations makes it mandatory to seek previous sanction from the Government or prescribed authority, first to contest the election and it is the duty of the federation to get it implemented at the State level.
The ministry has pointed out that a number of government servants were holding elected posts in various bodies and associations at national/state/district level and stressed on the need to adopt the instructions with immediate effect. Even canvassing in the election of office-bearers has been brought under the purview of the instructions.
All federations have been asked to follow the provisions and also incorporate the provisions in their constitutions. The State governments have been asked to formulate such rules/instructions for regulating the association of government servants.
The relevant rules have already been implemented at least in case of chess where an official was not given permission to re-contest the elections since he had already completed one term of four years.
It is now to be seen if the rule will be implemented by other associations in the State.
