PANJIM: Guardian Angel HS Sanvordem edged past Rosary HS Navelim via the tie-breaker 4-3 to enter the finals of Mahindra Youth Football League at Duler stadium, Mapusa, Thursday.
Guardian Angel dominated the proceedings from the word go but were unlucky not to forge ahead despite being relentlessly in the attack. The Rosary defence stood tall and steady and the teams played out a goalless draw till the end of regulation time.
Guardian Angel scored through Samuel D’Costa, Maclan Gomes, Sweeton Pereira and Amron Furtado while Joval Fernandes, Bosco Lobo and Lizbon Gomes were on target for Rosary.
Guardian Angel’s Sweeton Pereira was adjudged player-of-the-match.
In the other match, Don Bosco HS Panjim held off a spirited challenge from St Joseph HS Calangute scoring a convincing 2-0 victory. Both goals came in the second half through Elmer Sequeira.
Don Bosco were on a roll in the second half, and both goals were the result of strong midfield play. For Don Bosco, Glevito Miranda and Dayne Britto held their own, and were responsible for causing a lot of trouble in the rival defence.
Stopper back Dhiraj Chavan was exceptional, thwarting many a rival attack. St Joseph’s came into their own, and went all-out searching for that elusive goal, but the Don Bosco defence stood strong.
Goalscorer Elmer was adjudged player-of-the-match.
In the quarter-finals on Wednesday, St Joseph’s Calangute got the better of defending champions St Britto’s HS Mapusa 1-0 with the all- important goal coming off the boots of Akash Munshi in the second half.
Don Bosco Panjim beat Auxilium Convent Taleigao 2-1. The goals for Don Bosco were scored by Dwayne Britto and Elmar Sequeira. Devendra Murgaonkar was the lone scorer for Auxilium. All goals were scored in the first half.
