MARGAO: A fine brace by striker Minguel D’Souza helped Ponda Veterans blank Viva North Goa Veterans 2-0 to cruise into the quarter-finals of All- Goa Joao Manuel and Joseph Fernandes memorial football tournament organized by Sun Moon Stars Veterans, at church ground, Chandor, Monday. Ponda Veterans led 1-0 at the breaker.
The winners held the upper hand in both sessions and pushed their opponents on the back foot.
Ponda Veterans broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when striker Minguel slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot.
Spurred by the early success, Ponda Veterans intensified their attacks but could not add to their tally as their forwards misfired from close range.
After the break, Ponda Veterans continued to enjoy the better share of exchanges and scored the second goal soon after the resumption when Minguel punished the rival goalkeeper with a deft placement.
Down by two goals, Viva North Goa Veterans tried their best to reduce the deficit but failed to get past the rival rearguard.
Geneive Fernandes alias Chiku of Viva North Goa Veterans was adjudged man-of-the-match.
