MARGAO: A second half strike by Allister Fernandes helped Navelim Villagers Union to overcome Guardian Angel Sports Club, Curchorem 1-0 to enter the finals of All-Goa Joao Francisco Pacheco memorial inter-village football tournament organized by Betalbatim Sporting Club at Betalbatim sports complex, Saturday. There was no score at the lemon break.
In a pulsating semi-final, the teams displayed attacking brand of soccer and kept the crowd on their toes. The teams had equal number of scoring opportunities but their forwards were erratic after reaching the danger zone.
The same trend continued in the second session as the teams showed urgency and attacked each other goal regularly but without success. Just when it appeared that the encounter was heading for the tie-breaker, Allister found the match-winner when he picked up the ball from his own half and unleashed a stiff grounder which crashed into the net.
Stunned by the setback, Guardian Angel went all out to neutralize the deficit but to no avail as they could not get past the rival defenders who stood tall in protecting their slender lead.
Navelim Villagers will clash with St Anthony’s Sports Club, Colva in the finals on August 25.
