Navelim Sporting Club down St Anthony’s SC Colva

RAIA: Navelim Sporting Club had to dug deep to defeat St. Anthony’s Club, Colva 6-4 in the tie-breaker to enter the quarter-finals of Jaju memorial trophy football at St. John de Baptist ground, Dan-Benaulim, Tuesday. 

The match began on a slow pace with the teams content with defending their goal. Colva goalkeeper Valeriano brought off a splendid double save to deny Meliston Dias and Velington Almeida in quick succession.

Colva’s medio Cliff Dias shot past Navelim goalkeeper Jeet Gupta in the 23rd minute. Navelim fought back and restored parity when striker Meliston Dias was brought down jointly by Colva goalkeeper Valeriano and defender Mevan Goes to concede a penalty. Navelim midfielder Clinton Niasso converted with ease. 

After the breather, Navelim enjoyed more ball posession but could not score.

In the ensuing tie-breaker, Navelim netted through Clinton Niasso, Myran Gomes, Nash Pereira, Sadroy Costa and Terence Miranda. Ronnie Fernandes, Riston Gomes and Kabir Khan scored for Colva. Former referees Milagres Threza and Joaquim Manuel Silva were the special guests for the match.
