PANJIM: Navelim Veterans edged past Ponda Veterans 2-1 to move into the quarter-finals of the Flame of Unity Cup Football tournament, organized by Flame of Unity Club, Per-Seraulim, at Mabai ground, Per-Seraulim, on Sunday.
Navelim led 1-0 at half time with a goal scored by Pascoal Fernandes off a supply by Domnic Cabral in the 28th minute.
Thereafter, Ponda Veterans’ Prashant Kurade tried to equalize but his long ranger was fisted away by the rival goalkeeper in the 30th minute.
Post resumption, Ponda Veterans equalized in the 46th minute through Ramesh Palkar as the latter headed in off a cross by Djibi Fernandes in the 46th minute.
However, Navelim Veterans scored the match winner in the 59th minute through Caji Santiago’s grounder off an assist by Sukhdev Arvade.
