PANJIM: Our Lady of Fatima Sports Club, Baida, defeated Pinto Youth Club, Baradi, 3-1, in the inaugural match of 1st edition of AVCC open invitational 9-a-side football tournament organised by the Football Association of Velim Villagers (FAVV) in memory of Fr Druston Correia, Macduf Monteiro and Fr Nevel Gracias, who were pioneers in “The Beautiful Game”, in Velim, at church ground, Velim, on Tuesday.
Delmon Rebello (7’), Preston Fernandes (13′) and Velroce Dias (30′) scored for Our Lady of Fatima Sports Club, while Nosh Pinto reduced the margin for Pinto Youth Club in the 35th minute.
Our Lady of Fatima Sports Club Delmon Rebello’s outstanding performance earned him the player-of-the-match award.
In the second match, Peda Boys, Ambelim, outplayed Mix Friends, Chinchinim, 3-1. Mix Friends netted early in the 10th minute of the first half through Darryl Rebello’s stunning free-kick.
However, Pedda Boys came back strongly in the second half, Crossly Luis (25′), Blasco Fernandes (30′ and 40′) scored for Peda Boys.
Blasco Fernandes’ impressive skills secured him the player-of-the-match award.
The tournament will continue throughout the week, showcasing local football talent and promising exciting matches ahead with the final scheduled on September 16, at 4.30 pm.
Earlier, the tournament was blessed and declared open by Assistant Parish Priest of Velim Fr Warren Pereira.
