PANJIM: Salgaocar Football Club took a giant stride towards the title after a solid performance saw them blank Churchill Brothers Sports Club 2-0, in the GFA’s Taca Goa under-20 league match, at Assolna ground.
The match started on a brisk pace with Naro Hari Shrestha and Jason Barbosa missing gilt edged chances early on. The Salgaocar lads however manage to break the deadlock in the 18th minute when a cross by Yamnursab Pinjar from the left was chested down by Naro and played onto the path of Stefen Fernandes, who hammered home on the volley with his left foot. Churchill Brothers came close to finding the equalizer in the 35th minute, but an alert keeper thwarted the danger, pulling off a smart save in the process.
The Greens doubled their lead in added time at the end of the first 45 minutes. A beautifully worked move that originated out of defence saw Stefen set up Harmanjot Singh, the last named finishing in some style, leaving the keeper with no chance.
The Greens take on Dempo SC in their final game and need only a draw to be crowned champions.
