MAPUSA: Riding on a brace by Chandan Govekar, Saligao Sporting Club registered a 3-1 win over Vagator Parish Youth Sports Club in the GFA’s 2nd Division league match, at Poriat ground, on Tuesday.
Needing a win to avoid relegation, Saligao had just three points before Tuesday’s match.
Saligao came in with their very best and were led 2-0 at half time.
Noel Naik put Saligao ahead in the 19th minute capitalising on a goalkeeping error by Sanket from a long ball sent into the goal area by Chandan Govekar.
Vagator were completely outclassed by their rampant opponents who made it 2-0 ten minutes later when Chandan Govekar’s low grounder had no answer to the keeper after being set up by Uday Naik.
Crossing ends, Saligao did not sit back but piled more misery on Vagator when Chandan Govekar scored with a header from a cross delivered by Noel Naik to make it 3-0.
Vagator keeper Sanket made up for his initial blunder by stopping Chandan and Nelson Nunes shot in finding the net.
Pratak managed to pull one back for Vagator from the penalty spot which was awarded in the 74th minute by referee Tejas Nagvenkar after his goal bound shot was stopped by Inacio Colaco using his hand.
In the closing ten minutes, both the keepers brought up smart saves first Vagator’s Sanket denied Nelson Nunes and at the other end Saligao’s Ritul Holkar stopped Shaheel Shaikh’s shot in entering the goal.
