Sao Miguel blank Benaulim in opener

MARGAO: Clube Sao Miguel de Taleigao blanked United Club of Benaulim 2-0 in the inaugural match to move into the quarter-finals of 18th Our Lady of Merces 8-a-side inter-village football tournament organised by Sirlim Sports Club, at Chinchinim church ground, on Friday. Clube Sao Miguel de Taleigao were leading 1-0 at half time.

In the first quarter, both the teams tried to take lead with the strikers making good moves in each other’s territory but the defence neutralised the threats. 
Clube Sao Miguel soon applied their mind on attack and opened their account in the 27th minute through Jayandra Kunkolikar’s rasping shot off a supply from Vikram Naik. 
Thereafter, United Club of Benaulim in the 28th minute tried to equalise but Vellesly Afonso’s header kissed the crosspiece and went out, off an assist from Nasliton D’Silva.
Benaulim’s strikers tried hard to score goals but Sao Miguel’s defence foiled their every move till the end of first half.
Crossing over, United Club of Benaulim made lot of efforts to come to level terms and in the 36th minute came close to scoring but Naliston D’Silva floater went wide. Rody Fernandes assisted.
Clube Sao Miguel in the dying minutes doubled lead through Shasikant Naik’s well-composed ground shot off an assist from Jayandra Kunkolikar.
Earlier, chief guest Cira Rodrigues, wife of late Amancio Rodrigues, former president of Sirlim Sports Club, was introduced to the teams.
