BENAULIM: St Anthony Sports Club Colva defeated Margao Sports Club 5-4 via the tie-breaker to emerge champions of the 5th St Sebastian Union Club Benaulim Cup football tournament, played at St John the Baptist ground, Benaulim on Sunday.
Margao SC started the match on an attacking note and had the first chance in the fourth minute when Necil Pinto took control of the ball from Cliff Barretto and shot from close range which narrowly missed the mark.
At the other end, Margao SC keeper Swizel Pereira pulled off a stunning save to deny Colva’s Keith Rodrigues. There was no score at end of regulation time.
In the tie-breaker, St Anthony SC, Colva netted through Joseph Pereira, Maxon Fernandes, Rony Fernandes, Nelson Gomes and Baptist Fernandes while Margao SC netted through Valito Miranda, Necil Pinto, Danny Dias and Francis Andrade.
The winners were awarded a cash prize of Rs 40,000 while the runners-up had to be content with Rs 30,000.
Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao was the chief guest for the final and gave away prizes to the winners and runners-up in the presence of club officials and other dignitaries.
