MARGAO: St Anthony Sports Club registered a fluent 2-0 vctory over Verna Sports Club to storm into the final of all-Goa 25th Super Soccer inter-village tournament organized by United Boys of Dando-Colva, at St John the Baptist ground, Dando- Benaulim, on Thursday. All the goals came in the first half.
St Anthony held the upper hand in both the sessions with the combination of Sunny Fernandes and Socorro Fernandes that kept the rival defence on their toes.
The teams started in an attacking mode but t was St Anthony who broke the deadlock in the ninth minute after striker Sunny Fernandes nodded home off a well-measured cross from the flank by Socorro that did not allow the rival keeper any chance, 1-0.
The early lead seemed to rattle Verna who lost their concentration after conceding the goal. They tried hard to get back into the match but their midfield failed to function and the striking third lacked ideas upfront.
Meanwhile, St Anthony continued with the same pace and looked dangerous on every move. They finally doubled their lead in the 16th minute when Joseph Fernandes slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot. the all-important assist came from Rosario Fernandes, who used his intelligence to create a clear opening.
Down by 0-2, Verna tried their best but poor finishing led to their downfall.
The second half did not bring any relief to the sagging morale of Verna as they tried their best but failed to penetrate in the rival territory.
St Anthony had a couple of scoring opportunities but their forwards shot wide from close range.
St Anthony will now meet St Rock Youth Club, Majorda in the final on August 10.
