PANJIM: St Savio Sports Club, Calangute blanked ABC Arambol 2-0 to emerge champions in 5th Bardez Cup inter-village football tournament organised by United Club of Nerul, at panchayat ground, Ambhekhand-Verem.
St Savio led 1-0 at lemon break. They dominated the game with Sherwyn Lobo instrumental in the midfield.
St Savio broke the deadlock in the very third minute, when inform Sherwyn beat rival goalkeeper with snap shot off a cross from Pedro Gonsalves.
In the second half, ABC Arambol created some chances as Amit Fernandes efforts was fisted away for the corner by the St Savio custodian Marshall Fernandes.
In the 55th minute, Gladson Rodrigues of Arambol set up Amit but his chip was inches away and went just over the cross bar.
In the dying minutes, Arambol defender brought down Pedro in the danger zone, referee had no hesitation in pointing at the dreaded spot, which was coolly converted by Pedro to make it 2-0.
The following individual prizes were awarded: Best goalkeeper Marshall Fernandes (St Savio), Best defender Gladson Rodrigues (Arambol), Best half Amit Fernandes (Arambol), Best forward Pedro Gonsalves (St Savio).
MLA of Porvorim Constituency Rohan Khaunte was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Jayesh Salgaonkar, chairman North Goa Zilla Panchayat; Piedade Almeida, sarpanch of Village Panchayat Nerul; Babli Mandrekar and Uday Lingudkar, executive committee members of GFA.
Francis Fernandes compered while Raju Banavalikar proposed the vote of thanks.
