St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa, crowned football champions

MARGAO: St Xavier’s College, Mapusa beat Govt College, Quepem via the tie-breaker, 8-7, to win the inter-collegiate men’s football championship, organised by Goa University.

 In a well-contested final at Rosary College ground, Navelim, both the teams’ scores were 0-0 after the stipulated timing of the match. Both teams had nearly equal ball possession, shots on target, and good defence in the championship final.  Govt College, Quepem were on the offensive most of the time in the second half, with longer shots and penetration in the penalty area, but they could not score a goal.

St Xavier’s College also strengthened their defence and did some tough tackling to keep the Govt. College, Quepem attacks at bay.

And finally, at the penalty shout out, St Xavier’s College kept their cool in the decisive junction and won by 8-7, to lift the trophy.

Dr Ananya Das, Officiating Principal, Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science, Margao was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of  Fr Dylan D’Costa, Assistant to the Parish Priest of Navelim Parish, Dr Joydeep Bhattacharjee, Principal, Govt College, Quepem and Fr Antonio Salema, Administrator, St Xavier’s College, Mapusa and other dignitaries.
