PANJIM: Goan sportspersons representing the country internationally will not have to cry for funds as Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar, on Friday assured that he would make provisions to support them in the upcoming sports policy.
“We will incorporate this in the sports policy,” he said responding to Benaulim MLA Caitano Silva’s question on financial support to sportspersons. These benefits will also be made available to sportsperson representing the State at the National level.
The assurance came during a congratulatory motion tabled by Sankhali MLA Dr Pramod Sawant applauding Kantyani Prasad, Babu Naik and Prince Romeo, both from Salcete for being selected to represent India in the World power lifting bench press and dead lift championships scheduled to be held in Las Vegas, USA from October 17 to 19, 2014.
“They have made Goa proud. I request you to help them financially as they are representing the country worldwide,” he said.
Congress MLA Mauvin Godinho was in fact the first to demand that financial help to such sportspersons be included in the sports policy. “Anybody participating in sports should get funds,” he said. He praised the government and mentioned that Lusofonia Games has created sports culture in Goa and raised hopes of all sportpersons for assistance from the government.
