PANJIM: Verna Sports Club got the better of Holiday Inn Sports Club, Arpora in All-Goa Matanhy Saldanha Memorial inter-village football tournament organized by Velsao Villagers Association at Dr T B Da Cunha ground, Cansaulim, Tuesday. Verna led 3-1 at the breather.
Arpora got off to a dream start as they surged ahead in the third minute through Pramod Mardolkar.
Stung by the setback, Verna regrouped and equalized in the 14th minute through Richard Dias.
Verna played good short passes and scored their second after Myron Fernandes set up Bazileo Rego, who unleashed a venomous shot past rival custodian Ritesh Narvekar.
Verna continued attackingly and Richard scored his second before the half time.
In the second session, Arpora left-back Punaji Kalangutkar kept the rival defenders on their toes and set up Savio Pereira, who made it 3-2.
Subsequently, Verna’s fourth goal came through Myron.
In the final quarter, Arpora reduced the margin when Pramod Mardolkar powerfully headed in off a free- kick by Gaurish Naik.
Verna medio Wilson Fernandes rounded off the tally with his long ranger.
In an earlier match, Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club gained a walk-over as Betalbatim Sports Club reported without their GFA registration cards.
